Croatia is not just about indigenous grape varieties—this is where Bekovac, part of the Badel group, comes in. The winery, based in the Dalmatian hinterland, specialises in classic southern French varieties such as Grenache, Carignan and Syrah. In 2005, they launched an ambitious project in the Korlat vineyard, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
The terroir of Korlat consistently produces healthy grapes, allowing the winery to forgo chemical treatments entirely. The first vintage of Korlat Syrah (2007) was awarded the coveted Gold Medal at Vinitaly 2011 in the category for red wines with a geographical indication!
Pairs beautifully with duck/goose, semi-hard cheese, beef braise, lamb or ribeye steak.

Die kleine Ortschaft Korlat liegt unweit von Benkovac im Nordalmatinischen Hinterland. Vor einigen jahren startete Badel1862 hier ein ehrgeiziges Projekt. In dieser kargen Landschaft wurden neue Weingärten angelegt, mit dem Ziel, Reben für große Weine mit internationalem Format zu produzieren. Und das Projekt gelang. Mit dem Jahrgang 2007 begann man reinsortige Weine aus Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon und Merlot zu vermarkten.
